Runners World Ratings and reveiws

In short: My first marathon, in at the deep end, but managed to run all the way despite the hills!
In full: Very hilly route - the T-shirt proclaims it to be the "World's Toughest Road Marathon" - apparently run in an anti-clockwise direction for the first time (in a while anyway), which gets the biggest climb out of the way almost immediately. Glorious scenery running down Great Langdale and over into Little Langdale helped by almost ideal running conditions this year. Pace yourself well, drink and refuel a little at the well-spaced water stations, and you'll have a great race like I did!

Review 2

In short: The T-shirt says 'toughest road marathon in the world' (or similar). It fails to say how worthwhile all that effort is. Loved it.
In full: Two laps of the half - first lap is tough enough but the second is brutal. There's only a hardy/foolish(?) few that take on both laps so you could well end up on your own for much of the second lap. That said, there are water stations every three miles with plenty of happy, smiley encouraging marshalls to check you're OK. Not sure where the earlier reviewer went wrong but there weas loads of water available at the finish when I arrived.

The scenery is among the finest England has to offer but this is the Lake District so you have to work to see it. Fortunately, the weather was clear this year - I believe its a different experience entirely in the wet.

Overall - small, friendly and reasonably priced. No unnecessary frills just everything you need to deliver a proper gem of a race.

Many, many thanks to Rod and all his team.

Review 3

In short: Hills, hills and more hills!

In full
: Fantastic scenery made the effort of all the hills worthwhile. Plenty of waterstations on course, but no water at end. The atmosphere was friendly, especially on the second lap, when it was only the mad marathoners left. Thoroughly enjoyed the run, and may come back again, just a bit of a treck up country from Portsmouth. Whatever you do, put this on your list of must do marathons.
